Working Smarter: New Year’s Building Blocks

I seriously debated whether or not to write New Year’s resolutions for 2015. I knew a high percentage of people get derailed pretty quickly. I also knew that group included me. It starts out alright. I’m excited or at least interested. I write an inspired plan. I believe it’s going to work–for a minute. Then either life gets in the way or I’m running off to chase the next new shiny thing. So I figured why bother?  I knew what  people who flock to the gym in January only to quit in February  knew. Perfectionists and overachievers could hardly wait to snidely talk about us losers (their word, not mine) who quit after only a month. Snickering  behind their hands over our lack of discipline. Loud whispers questioning why it’s so hard for us to get it together. Two thoughts followed. 1)Screw them  2) Maybe my dreamy Pisces nature could stand a little  more structure. So I’m in. It takes at least 21 days to form a new habit.  I’m going to give it at least 3o. Except for February. One goal a month. Just like building blocks. I don’t know how this is going to work. Maybe it’ll fly. Maybe it won’t. There is some excitement in not knowing for sure.  At least I can say I tried something new for the New Year.

This month I’m tackling being more mindful.

For the month of January, I pledge to pay more attention to what I’m doing.  Observe how I’m spending my time. Do LESS multitasking.  Zero in on where I am in life and uncover what I really want. Learn to be more present!

My strategies are simple:

1) Post signs around the house to remind me to stay in the moment

2) Write in a journal nightly to track my progress

3) Continue to keep this  process as simple as possible

The benefits of being more mindful include:

-Better focus and concentration

-Feeling calmer and more relaxed

-Decreased stress and anxiety

-Increased health

-Increased self awareness

-Increased impulse control

I also expect to:

-Become a better listener

– Get in touch with how I feel

-Be more aware of how I spend my time

-Identify what is important to me

-Be led to my perfect goal for February

My wish list includes:

-Learning to work smarter and get things done quickly

– Always knowing where my work keys are

-Having a home that is always company ready

I really want that last one.  Maybe there’s a chance…..
